How can internally displaced people influence decisions in their communities? This is the focus of the training series “The Voice of IDPs: How to Effectively Engage with Authorities and Influence Community Life,” organized under the United Voices in Action program. Participants will learn how to use local democracy tools, communicate effectively with public authorities, and advocate for the needs of displaced people.
During the training, participants will gain practical knowledge about how local government works and which tools can be used to influence decisions at the community level. In particular, they will learn how to:
- understand who is responsible for what within the community and whom to contact with specific issues;
- prepare effective official requests in order to receive substantive responses rather than formal replies;
- use electronic petitions to address shared community challenges;
- understand how IDP Councils operate and how they help ensure that the needs of displaced people are reflected in local programs.
These skills can benefit both active displaced community members and those who have only recently begun engaging in community life. They help people move from the role of aid recipients to becoming active participants in local decision-making.
